Whisky Nikka Taketsuru 21 year old Bottle-70 cl

Nikka Taketsuru 21 years old is an amber Japanese whisky from the Nikka house, crafted in the pure malt style, meaning a blend of malt whiskies. Its stated age of 21 years underlines the maturity of this cuvée, which combines the assertive character of Yoichi malts with the elegance and precision of Miyagikyo. Bottled at 43%, it has been awarded World’s Best Blended Malt at the World Whiskies Awards four times: in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Nikka Taketsuru

Taketsuru is a range of blended malts crafted by Nikka Whisky and named in honor of its founder, Masataka Taketsuru. It primarily combines malt whiskies from the Japanese distilleries of Yoichi and Miyagikyo, whose contrasting profiles are brought together by the blending team's expertise. The Taketsuru 17 Years Old and 21 Years Old expressions belong to this house and not to an independent wine estate.

Histoire du domaine

Masataka Taketsuru (1894-1979) studied distillation and blending techniques in Scotland, notably in Campbeltown, before returning to Japan with his wife Rita in 1920. After helping Kotobukiya, now Suntory, build the Yamazaki distillery, completed in 1924, he left the company in March 1934 to pursue his own project in Hokkaido. On July 2, 1934, he founded Dai Nippon Kaju, the company that gave rise to Nikka, and had the Yoichi distillery built the same year; whisky production began in 1936 and the first Nikka whiskies were commercialized in 1940. The company took the name The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd. in 1952. Its development continued with the installation of a Coffey still in 1963 and the opening of the Miyagikyo distillery in 1969, providing Nikka with two Japanese sources of malts with complementary characters. Takeshi Taketsuru, Masataka's nephew and adopted son, joined the company in 1949, becoming its second master blender and then its fifth president in 1985. The range bearing the Taketsuru name began in 2000 with Taketsuru Pure Malt 12 Years Old and subsequently won numerous international accolades, particularly for its 17 and 21-year-old versions. Asahi, which acquired a stake in the company in 1954, made Nikka a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2001; production remains handled by Nikka and commercialization by Asahi Breweries. Since 2025, Junji Iseki has held the roles of chief blender and head of the blending department.
