The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery situated on the Easter Elchies estate, near Craigellachie, in the Speyside region of Scotland. Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, it is now owned by the Scottish group Edrington. Its whiskies are produced from spirits matured, in particular, in oak casks that have been seasoned with sherry.

Histoire du domaine
Alexander Reid, a schoolteacher and tenant farmer, obtained a distilling licence in 1824 for his farm at Easter Elchies, in Speyside. At that time, the farm comprised just seven acres. The distillery took the name The Macallan and produced Scotch malt whisky. In 1892, Roderick Kemp acquired the distillery; he is regarded by the company as one of the architects of its expansion beyond Scotland. His daughter, Janet Harbinson, subsequently played a part in managing the family business. In 1996, The Macallan was acquired by Highland Distillers. Edrington bought Highland Distillers in 1999 and subsequently added The Macallan to its portfolio of brands. A new distillery and visitor centre opened on the Easter Elchies estate in 2018. Since 2019, Kirsteen Campbell has held the position of Master Whisky Maker, becoming the first woman to hold this role at The Macallan. Since 2023, Edrington has also stepped up its investment in the sherry-cask sector in Spain, a key resource for the maturation of the brand’s whiskies.
