Maison Leroy Bourgogne Rouge 1998 Bouteille (75cl)
The 1998 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Rouge is a red Burgundy wine produced by Maison Leroy, classified as Village and made from 100% Pinot Noir. Jancis Robinson awards it 16/20 and recommends drinking it between 2002 and 2012. The review describes a rich and creamy nose, followed by a very dry, austere, and structured palate, in a style crafted for lovers of straight and demanding wines.

Maison Leroy
Maison Leroy is a Burgundian wine merchant founded in 1868 by François Leroy. Based in Meursault, it selects Burgundy wines under the direction of Lalou Bize-Leroy, who has been the company’s chairwoman since 1971. It should be distinguished from Domaine Leroy, which was formed through vineyard acquisitions made in the late 1980s.

Histoire du domaine
Maison Leroy was founded in 1868 by François Leroy, a winegrower who had already been selling his own Burgundy wines for nearly twenty years. His son Joseph gradually expanded the wine merchant business in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henri Leroy then joined the family business in 1919 and contributed to its expansion, whilst also pursuing activities related to cognac. In 1942, he acquired approximately half of the shares in the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. His daughter, Lalou Bize-Leroy, joined the company in 1955 and became its chairwoman in 1971. She was co-manager of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from 1974 to 1992. In the late 1980s, wishing to have greater control over the origin of the grapes and viticultural practices, she acquired vineyards, notably from the Charles Noëllat estate in Vosne-Romanée in 1988 and the Philippe-Rémy estate in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1989; these properties make up the Domaine Leroy, a separate entity from the wine merchant firm. To finance these acquisitions, a third of Maison Leroy’s share capital was sold to Takashimaya. Lalou Bize-Leroy continues to this day to oversee the selection of wines marketed by the company.
