Histoire du domaine
Castello di Ama was founded in 1976 by four families from Rome, who set about restoring a vineyard that had been neglected following the end of sharecropping in the 1960s. The revival brought together Tomaso Carini, Gianvittorio Cavanna, Lionello Sebasti and Pietro Tradico. Before 1980, the partners had replanted a large part of the vineyard and built a modern fermentation cellar. The first vintage of the Vigneto Bellavista selection was produced in 1978. Marco Pallanti joined the estate in 1982 to lay its technical foundations and continues to serve as managing director and oenologist. During the 1980s, the estate developed several single-vineyard selections, including San Lorenzo, La Casuccia and Bertinga, whilst also experimenting with Merlot in particular, which gave rise to L’Apparita. Lorenza Sebasti, daughter of Lionello Sebasti, joined the company in 1988 and became managing director in 1993. Since the 1990s, the estate has continued to restructure its vineyards and expand its winery. In 1999, Castello di Ama launched a contemporary art project in the village of Ama. Recent public sources identify Lorenza Sebasti and Marco Pallanti as the owners of the estate.
L'Apparita
L'Apparita is a Toscana IGT made exclusively from Merlot and produced as a distinct wine since 1985. It comes from two parcels located at the top of the Bellavista vineyard, on predominantly clay soils. Castello di Ama presents it as the first pure Merlot produced in Tuscany and as a cult wine.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The vineyard is called "L'Apparita" because, from its highest point, the tower of Siena's town hall appears in the distance.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1985
- Style of the cuvée
- A terroir-driven Tuscan Merlot aiming for a concentrated yet elegant expression, featuring an enveloping texture, silky and powerful tannins, freshness, and a long persistence.
- Position within the range
- Iconic single-parcel Merlot and cult wine of Castello di Ama, positioned among the estate's prestigious benchmarks.
Histoire de la cuvée
When Marco Pallanti arrived in 1982, a small parcel previously planted with Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca was top-grafted with Merlot. The qualitative results led Castello di Ama to create a dedicated label, L'Apparita, whose first vintage was produced in 1985. The wine has since been crafted from the two parcels that constitute the L'Apparita cru at the top of Bellavista.
