Domaine Zind Humbrecht
Located in Turckheim, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms 42 hectares spread across several major grands crus and lieux-dits in Alsace, notably Rangen, Brand, Hengst, Clos Windsbuhl, and Heimbourg. Histoire du domaine
The Humbrecht family claims a winemaking continuity in Alsace dating back to 1620. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was established in 1959 in Wintzenheim by Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind, uniting the wine-growing heritage of both families. Its vineyard grew with the acquisition of Clos Saint-Urbain in the Rangen de Thann grand cru in 1977, parcels in Hengst, Brand, and Heimbourg in 1978, Clos Jebsal in 1983, and Clos Windsbuhl in 1987. At the same time, Léonard Humbrecht modernized vinification, notably by installing temperature control in the traditional foudres in 1981 and whole-bunch pressing starting in 1986. Olivier Humbrecht took over responsibility for the wines and the vineyard in 1989, the year he earned the Master of Wine title. In 1992, the estate installed its cellars and operational buildings in the heart of Herrenweg de Turckheim. The first trials in organic and biodynamic agriculture began in 1997; the entire estate achieved Ecocert certification in 2000, followed by Biodyvin certification in 2002. Olivier and Margaret Humbrecht have co-managed the estate since the early 2000s, and their son Pierre-Émile joined them in 2019, now also working on wine production.
Roche Roulée
Roche Roulée refers to wines from the gravelly and alluvial sector of the Herrenweg de Turckheim, notably in Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat. The estate explicitly markets these wines under this name and links them to its "Roche" range, designed to illustrate the influence of major soil types. Depending on the grape varieties and vintages, the selected plots may correspond in particular to the oldest vines of this terroir.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name evokes the rolled pebbles and alluvial gravels of the Herrenweg de Turckheim, formed on the former alluvial fan of the Fecht.
- Style of the cuvée
- Generally expressive and aromatic profile, marked by ripe fruit, ripe acidity, and a certain generosity. The old vines of the alluvial gravels can bring greater structure and minerality, with wines often accessible relatively early.
- Position within the range
- Expression of alluvial gravels within the "Roche" range, alongside the Roche Calcaire and Roche Granitique or Volcanique cuvées.
Histoire de la cuvée
The reference is documented on the estate's website at least as early as the 2017 vintage. The wines concerned were previously frequently presented under the name Herrenweg de Turckheim or under a communal indication; the estate now uses Roche Roulée for certain expressions of this terroir, sometimes only in vintages deemed favorable to poor, highly draining soils.
