Histoire du domaine
Domaine Georges Vernay has its origins in Condrieu in the late 1930s, when Francis Vernay planted Viognier vines at the Coteau de Vernon site. He released the first Coteau de Vernon cuvée in 1940. His son Georges succeeded him in 1953 and played an active role in preserving and then reviving the Viognier grape and the Condrieu appellation, which were then in sharp decline. In 1992, he created a second Condrieu cuvée, Les Chaillées de l’Enfer. Christine Vernay took over the family estate in 1996 and has been responsible for both its management and winemaking. She has expanded the vineyard across the appellations of the northern Rhône Valley and converted the entire estate to organic farming. Her daughter Emma joined the estate in 2020 and works alongside her mother, particularly in the vineyards. The estate now comprises 24 hectares of planted and cultivated vineyards, the grapes from which are all vinified on site. It is now certified as organic and biodynamic.
Les Chaillées de L'Enfer
Les Chaillées de l’Enfer is a single-plot Condrieu created by Georges Vernay in 1992. Produced from old Viognier vines cultivated on steep granitic terraces, it is distinguished by its tension, freshness, salinity, and balance between firmness and amplitude.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- Georges Vernay named the cuvée in reference to the very steep terraces overlooking the Rhône.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1992
- Style of the cuvée
- A refined and expressive Condrieu, generally combining stone fruit, citrus, flowers, herbal notes, and spices. Its profile remains taut, fresh, saline, and pure, with a more immediate and charming expression than that of Coteau de Vernon.
- Position within the range
- The estate's second historic Condrieu cuvée, alongside Coteau de Vernon and Les Terrasses de l’Empire.
Histoire de la cuvée
Georges Vernay created Les Chaillées de l’Enfer in 1992 as the estate's second Condrieu cuvée after Coteau de Vernon. The vines, planted before 1960, previously went into the estate's generic Condrieu; isolating them as a single-plot cuvée embodies Christine Vernay's bond with her father.
