Histoire du domaine
Domaine Georges Vernay has its origins in Condrieu in the late 1930s, when Francis Vernay planted Viognier vines at the Coteau de Vernon site. He released the first Coteau de Vernon cuvée in 1940. His son Georges succeeded him in 1953 and played an active role in preserving and then reviving the Viognier grape and the Condrieu appellation, which were then in sharp decline. In 1992, he created a second Condrieu cuvée, Les Chaillées de l’Enfer. Christine Vernay took over the family estate in 1996 and has been responsible for both its management and winemaking. She has expanded the vineyard across the appellations of the northern Rhône Valley and converted the entire estate to organic farming. Her daughter Emma joined the estate in 2020 and works alongside her mother, particularly in the vineyards. The estate now comprises 24 hectares of planted and cultivated vineyards, the grapes from which are all vinified on site. It is now certified as organic and biodynamic.
Côteau de Vernon
Coteau de Vernon is a Condrieu from the eponymous historic hillside, in the heart of the appellation and of Domaine Georges Vernay. Crafted from Viognier, this parcel selection is the estate's very first cuvée. It is distinguished by its pursuit of power, length, finesse, and elegance.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The cuvée takes its name from the lieu-dit and hillside of Vernon, where Francis Vernay planted his first vines.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1940
- Style of the cuvée
- A complex and elegant Condrieu, combining intensity, length, and finesse. Its overall profile favors freshness, tension, precision, a pronounced acidity, and a controlled expression of Viognier, featuring floral, fruity, vegetal, or mentholated notes and fine bitterness.
- Position within the range
- The estate's first historic cuvée and emblematic Condrieu, presented as the quintessence of the appellation.
Histoire de la cuvée
Francis Vernay planted his first vines in the lieu-dit Coteau de Vernon starting in 1937, then vinified and launched the estate's first cuvée under this name in 1940. Georges Vernay subsequently developed this Condrieu vineyard by clearing and replanting the granitic hillsides starting in 1953. The cuvée has remained one of the estate's historic and emblematic wines.
