Domain Weinbach Gewuztraminer Altenbourg Quintessence de Grains Nobles Cuvee Or 1997 Bottle-50 cl
The 1997 Domaine Weinbach Gewürztraminer Altenbourg Quintessence de Grains Nobles Cuvée d'Or is an Alsatian white wine made exclusively from Gewürztraminer. This cuvée comes from the Altenbourg terroir in Kientzheim, a hillside situated between 220 and 300 meters in altitude. Its marly-limestone-sandstone soils, featuring deep clay-limestone horizons, are particularly well-suited to the expression of Gewürztraminer and high maturity levels.

Its historic headquarters is the Clos des Capucins, a former monastic vineyard; the estate has been owned by the Faller family since 1898. Histoire du domaine
The Domaine Weinbach website is associated with a former Capuchin monastery established in 1612, within the Clos des Capucins in Kaysersberg-Vignoble. The vineyard itself is first documented in 890, when part of the land was donated to Étival Abbey, before a plot was set aside for the Capuchins in the early 17th century. During the French Revolution, the estate was sold as national property. The Faller brothers acquired it in 1898 and made it part of their family’s winemaking history. Their son and nephew, Théo Faller, subsequently developed the estate and championed the recognition of Alsace wines as an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC). Following his death in 1979, his wife Colette and their daughters Catherine and Laurence took over. Catherine Faller has been running the estate with her sons Eddy and Théo since 2016. The vineyard has been cultivated using organic methods since 1990; biodynamic farming was trialled on 8 hectares from 1998 onwards and then extended to the estate’s full 38 hectares with the 2005 vintage. Ghislain Berthiot, who trained under Laurence Faller, is responsible for winemaking.
Cuvée d'Or
Cuvée d'Or designates an extremely rare historical production of Quintessence de Grains Nobles from Domaine Weinbach. It corresponds to an extensive selection of berries affected by noble rot, produced in tiny quantities in just a few vintages. This reference has been marketed with various grape varieties and terroirs, notably gewurztraminer, pinot gris, and riesling.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1983
- Style of the cuvée
- A sweet white wine of exceptional concentration, marked by botrytis, great aromatic complexity, a dense texture, and a sought-after balance between richness and freshness.
- Position within the range
- The extremely rare pinnacle of the estate's sweet wines, positioned above the classic Sélections de Grains Nobles.
Histoire de la cuvée
Cuvée d'Or is documented as early as the 1983 vintage, notably in the form of a gewurztraminer SGN produced by Colette Faller. Domaine Weinbach officially indicates that the name "Quintessence" was born at the estate and was used for the first time by a 1983 cuvée. Subsequent vintages of Cuvée d'Or are documented across several grape varieties and terroirs of the estate.
