Histoire du domaine

The history of the Romanée-Conti vineyard dates back to the Priory of Saint-Vivant, founded in the early 10th century, which owned land in Vosne during the Middle Ages. The future vineyard was known as the Cros des Cloux before being leased in perpetuity to Claude Cousin in 1584. It then passed to Jacques Venot in 1621, and subsequently to the de Croonembourg family; the name ‘Romanée’ first appears in historical records in 1651. In 1760, Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, acquired the Romanée, with which his name remains associated. The vineyard was confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently sold at auction in 1794. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought La Romanée-Conti in 1869 and merged it with other wine-growing estates he already owned. Following a series of family transfers, the Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was incorporated on 31 July 1942, when Henri Leroy acquired Jacques Chambon’s shares. The estate acquired La Tâche in 1933, vineyards in Montrachet in 1963, and became the tenant of Romanée-Saint-Vivant Marey-Monge in 1966, before the partners acquired it in 1984. It also took on a lease for 2.2746 hectares of Corton in 2008, then entered into a sharecropping arrangement for 2.9132 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 2018. Since 2021, the estate has been co-managed by Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal; Alexandre Bernier oversees the cellar and winemaking.

La Tâche

La Tâche is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically delimited climat in Vosne-Romanée, consisting of the cadastral lieux-dits "La Tâche" and "Les Gaudichots ou la Tâche". Its plots form a narrow strip elongated in the direction of the slope, between 250 and 300 metres in altitude, with a gentle slope facing east. The soils, shallow, clayey, carbonated and rich in iron oxides, overlie a limestone subsoil ensuring efficient drainage. The site is a monopole owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Histoire de la parcelle

The presence of vines in Vosne-Romanée is documented as early as the Middle Ages, notably within the possessions of the Abbey of Saint-Vivant. Known since the 17th century, the La Tâche lieu-dit appears to have remained undivided and is said to have known only three owners since the French Revolution. A part of the neighboring lieu-dit Les Gaudichots, whose wines were assimilated to those of La Tâche according to practices dating back to the 18th century, was added to the historical core. Cited as first class by André Jullien in 1816 and classified as "Tête de cuvée hors ligne" by Jules Lavalle in 1855, La Tâche was recognized as an appellation d'origine contrôlée on September 11, 1936.

The 2009 La Tache presents a rich tapestry of nearly indescribable elegance. The aromas and flavors seem to hover on the palate in this intensely sweet, perfumed La Tache. Bright floral notes, hard candy and mint ring out on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2030-2060. I tasted the 2010s twice from barrel, once in the summer just as the wines were about to be racked and then again during my early December visit. On both occasions the wines were stellar. Like virtually all of his colleagues, co-manager Aubert de Villaine was surprised by the level of the 2010s given all of the challenges of the growing season. I could repeat everything de Villaine told me, but there is no better source than the man himself, so readers who want to learn more about the 2010 harvest may want to take a look at my interview with de Villaine on www.erobertparker.com. Overall, I am very impressed with the 2010s with the exception of the Corton, which appears to be a notch or two below the 2009. The 2010 that most greatly exceeds its appellation and historical level of quality is the Echezeaux. I also tasted the 2010 Vosne-Romanee Cuvee Duvault-Blochet but the domaine had not yet decided if the wine would be released. I will report on the 2009s in our April issue. NB vintage. Very rich and haunting on the nose with truffles and violets. Then admirably firm on the palate. But so much stuffing! Liqueur red burgundy… Great energy. Great muscularity. Wonderful silkiness almost disguises those tannins. Enormous persistence without heaviness. Neat finish. Thoroughly energetic. Absolutely heavenly. Bravo!
