Histoire du domaine

The history of the Romanée-Conti vineyard dates back to the Priory of Saint-Vivant, founded in the early 10th century, which owned land in Vosne during the Middle Ages. The future vineyard was known as the Cros des Cloux before being leased in perpetuity to Claude Cousin in 1584. It then passed to Jacques Venot in 1621, and subsequently to the de Croonembourg family; the name ‘Romanée’ first appears in historical records in 1651. In 1760, Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, acquired the Romanée, with which his name remains associated. The vineyard was confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently sold at auction in 1794. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought La Romanée-Conti in 1869 and merged it with other wine-growing estates he already owned. Following a series of family transfers, the Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was incorporated on 31 July 1942, when Henri Leroy acquired Jacques Chambon’s shares. The estate acquired La Tâche in 1933, vineyards in Montrachet in 1963, and became the tenant of Romanée-Saint-Vivant Marey-Monge in 1966, before the partners acquired it in 1984. It also took on a lease for 2.2746 hectares of Corton in 2008, then entered into a sharecropping arrangement for 2.9132 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 2018. Since 2021, the estate has been co-managed by Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal; Alexandre Bernier oversees the cellar and winemaking.

Parcelle & terroir

Grands Échezeaux (Vosne Romanée)

Les Grands Échezeaux form a physically distinct climat in Flagey-Echézeaux and a Grand Cru appellation producing exclusively red wines. Facing east, the terroir is a continuation of Musigny along the north-south axis of the Côte and features a relatively regular topography. It lies at an altitude of around 250 meters on clay-limestone soils covering a Bajocian limestone slab, with a 3 to 4% slope.

Histoire de la parcelle

The vineyard is presented as a foundation of the Abbey of Cîteaux dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, much like neighboring Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot. The Grand Cru appellation d'origine contrôlée was established on July 31, 1937.

The 2021 Grands Échézeaux Grand Cru is deeper pitched and denser than the Echézeaux. Mingling aromas of wild berries and plums with notions of sweet spices, incense and rose petals, it's full-bodied, broad and textural, with an almost unctuous attack that segues into a layered mid-palate that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the long, sapid finish. This is always a wine built for the long haul, and the 2021 is no exception.

Higher yields here because part of the vineyard was protected from the frost by bougies (candles). Co-director Perrine Fenal describes Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux as more like cousins than brothers this year. Vines on average 30 years old. Yield 21.6 hl/ha. Bottled 17 March 2023. Total production 742 cases of 12. Mid to light ruby. Darker fruited than the Échezeaux. Smells as I imagine wild raspberries might, with a light wood/cedary character adding a savoury aspect to the dark-red fruit. Firm, layered, paper-fine tannins give you something to bite on but they are still ineffably fine in texture. Sober, elegant, pure, dark restraint. Intense and yet has a modesty about it. Immensely long.
