Histoire du domaine

The history of the Romanée-Conti vineyard dates back to the Priory of Saint-Vivant, founded in the early 10th century, which owned land in Vosne during the Middle Ages. The future vineyard was known as the Cros des Cloux before being leased in perpetuity to Claude Cousin in 1584. It then passed to Jacques Venot in 1621, and subsequently to the de Croonembourg family; the name ‘Romanée’ first appears in historical records in 1651. In 1760, Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, acquired the Romanée, with which his name remains associated. The vineyard was confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently sold at auction in 1794. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought La Romanée-Conti in 1869 and merged it with other wine-growing estates he already owned. Following a series of family transfers, the Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was incorporated on 31 July 1942, when Henri Leroy acquired Jacques Chambon’s shares. The estate acquired La Tâche in 1933, vineyards in Montrachet in 1963, and became the tenant of Romanée-Saint-Vivant Marey-Monge in 1966, before the partners acquired it in 1984. It also took on a lease for 2.2746 hectares of Corton in 2008, then entered into a sharecropping arrangement for 2.9132 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 2018. Since 2021, the estate has been co-managed by Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal; Alexandre Bernier oversees the cellar and winemaking.

Parcelle & terroir

Grands Échezeaux (Vosne Romanée)

Les Grands Échezeaux form a physically distinct climat in Flagey-Echézeaux and a Grand Cru appellation producing exclusively red wines. Facing east, the terroir is a continuation of Musigny along the north-south axis of the Côte and features a relatively regular topography. It lies at an altitude of around 250 meters on clay-limestone soils covering a Bajocian limestone slab, with a 3 to 4% slope.

Histoire de la parcelle

The vineyard is presented as a foundation of the Abbey of Cîteaux dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, much like neighboring Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot. The Grand Cru appellation d'origine contrôlée was established on July 31, 1937.

2019-2039

The 2009 Grands-Echezeaux jumps from the glass with vivid aromatics and equally voluptuous fruit. Despite its richness, the Grands-Echezeaux seems to hover on the palate. Layers of fruit continue to build to the long super-refined finish. Over the last few years the Grands-Echezeaux seems like the most improved wine at DRC. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s 2009s have turned out just as brilliantly as I had hoped. The wines reflect the signature qualities of the year, but never lose their essential classicism. Long-time DRC fans know the domaine bottles in six-barrel lots, which naturally introduces a level of bottle variation that is not found in most other wines. I hope the massive amount of information that has recently come to light regarding counterfeit wines and their proliferation might be the catalyst for the domaine to consider bottling their wines in one homogenous lot, as is common for the vast majority of high-quality wines throughout the world. Once the domaine’s wines mature in 20-30 years it will be impossible to tell the difference between ‘normal’ bottle variation, poorly stored bottles and very good fakes. Certainly consumers who are willing and able to pay the prices these wines fetch are at the very least deserving of a consistent product. Importer: Wilson-Daniels, St. Helena, CA; tel. Mid to dark ruby. Sumptuous nose with great lift with a hint of putty. Quite mineral. Racy and mossy. Crackling fruit. Chewy finish and tightens up on the finish. A hint of violets here. Transparent. Lift on the finish. Very long. Firming up a bit.
