Histoire du domaine
The estate traces its origins to early 1885, when Jacques Lignier, then a foreman at a Côte de Nuits estate, acquired plots affected by phylloxera. His son Jules subsequently helped to replant the vineyard and passed this legacy on to his sons, including Henri Lignier. Henri developed his own estate, which reached 4.5 hectares by 1960. His son Hubert took over the estate in 1959 and gradually expanded it through the purchase and exchange of plots. In 1973, he introduced on-site bottling. Romain Lignier joined his father in 1992, when the estate covered 7.5 hectares, and played a key role in the return to traditional soil cultivation methods. Following Romain’s death in 2004, Laurent Lignier joined his parents and took over the running of the estate from 2006. A new winery was built in Morey-Saint-Denis in 2008. The estate began using synthetic-free methods in 2007, began the transition to organic farming in 2016 and obtained AB certification in 2019. The estate covered 11 hectares by 2020; Laurent Lignier oversees the winemaking, whilst Sébastien and Maëlle Lignier are gradually becoming involved.
Les Chaffots
Les Chaffots is a climate officially classified as Premier Cru of the AOP Morey-Saint-Denis, located entirely within the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis. It occupies the upper part of the slope, above the Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis, in an elevated sector close to the combe. A source specifically dedicated to this climate describes a steep slope and fossiliferous stones; the east-southeast exposure and the altitude of around 330 meters are, however, only documented for a producer's plot and cannot be generalized with certainty to the entire boundary.

- According to Domaine Michel Magnien, "Chaffots" is said to designate places where haylofts were located; the name could also evoke a scaffold or gallows linked to manorial justice, this second interpretation being presented as a hypothesis.

Histoire de la parcelle
Les Chaffots appears on the official list of the twenty climates that can complete the name of the AOP Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru. The AOC Morey-Saint-Denis was established in 1936. The consulted sources do not allow establishing a specific ancient history for the entire climate with greater precision; the available medieval mentions mainly concern the vineyard of Morey-Saint-Denis as a whole.
