Domaine Georges Roumier

Domaine Georges Roumier is a family-run estate based in Chambolle-Musigny, in the Côte de Nuits. Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, it is now run by his grandson Christophe Roumier, alongside his sister Delphine. Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, following his marriage to Geneviève Quanquin, who came from a family that owned vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. Georges Roumier then settled in the village and gradually developed the family estate in the Côte de Nuits. He was one of the winemakers who bottled their own wines on the estate, at a time when this practice was still relatively uncommon. His son Jean-Marie officially succeeded him in 1961. In the 1950s, the estate expanded to include vineyards in Bonnes-Mares and the Clos de la Bussière in Morey-Saint-Denis, a 2.59-hectare plot acquired in 1953. A plot of Corton-Charlemagne was added to the estate in 1968. Jean-Marie Roumier then acquired a plot of Musigny Grand Cru in 1978. Christophe Roumier, a graduate in oenology, joined his father in the early 1980s, and the entire harvest has been bottled at the estate since the 1983 vintage. Since Jean-Marie’s retirement in 1990, Christophe Roumier has managed the estate and overseen the winemaking. The estate has also strengthened its independence by purchasing vineyards previously farmed under lease or sharecropping arrangements, notably in Charmes-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. Chemical fertilisers were phased out in 1988, followed by herbicides in 1989; however, the estate is not certified organic.

Parcelle & terroir

Musigny [Rouge]

Musigny is a Grand Cru appellation and a physically demarcated terroir in Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. Located above Clos de Vougeot, between the Premier Cru Les Amoureuses and the Grand Cru Échezeaux, it includes the lieux-dits Les Musigny, Les Petits Musigny, and part of La Combe d’Orveau. The vineyard occupies a fairly steep limestone and rocky terrace, the southern part of which rises towards the Combe d’Orveau. The appellation permits red wines and, as a singularity in the Côte de Nuits, a small production of white wine.

Histoire de la parcelle

The reputation and demarcation of Musigny predate the AOC system: a judgment defining the cru dates from April 16, 1929. The Musigny Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée was initially recognized by the decree of September 11, 1936. The currently demarcated parcel area mentioned in the product specification was approved by the INAO during the sessions of June 1 and 2, 1988.

There are one and a half barrels of the 2017 Musigny Grand Cru, a superb but reserved wine that unwinds to reveal aromas of rose petal, cherries, raspberries, sweet spices, orange rind and espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and complete, with a layered, multidimensional core, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. Like the Bonnes-Mares, this looks to be one of the wines of the vintage, though it's even less outgoing at this early stage.

‘We don’t usually taste the Musigny’, Roumier tells the young Japanese couple tasting with me, who earned their opportunity because the young man was a picker in 2018. 1.5 barrels (1.75 in 2018) and the full barrel is new. Just less than 0.1 ha (a quarter of an acre). Ancient vines – 1905 or possibly older because the cadastre of vineyards was rewritten in 1905 and when they didn’t know how old a vineyard was they just wrote 1905. His grandfather started as a share-cropper on this vineyard in 1924 and the vines were already old. Racked three weeks ago and the barrels were blended. 75% whole bunch. Barrel sample. Just a little extra note of oak sweetness because of the way they had to use one new barrel. Real concentration here. Intense pure dark-red fruit. Show-stopping in its effortless intensity and infinite purity. The tannins are so supple that it flows endlessly over the palate without friction. Just silky and everlasting. The fruit is sheer beauty of dark purity. The finish is both dry and minerally but without any loss of fruit.
