Histoire du domaine
Château du Domaine de l’Église is recognised as a historic estate in Pomerol: documents compiled in the *Vieux Papiers du Libournais* attest to the existence of its vineyard as early as 1589. The estate was formerly known as Domaine de la Porte Rouge. According to the history recounted by the estate, it was once church property and, in the Middle Ages, belonged to the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, who were based along the route to Santiago de Compostela. During the French Revolution, the estate was seized as national property. It was sold in 1793 to the Bertin family. This family produced ten tonneaux in 1893, then twenty tonneaux in 1949; Simon Landard, nephew of Laure Bertin, subsequently managed the estate for a few years. Émile Castéja acquired the estate in 1973, at the same time as Château Pignon in Lalande-de-Pomerol. The estate is now owned by Philippe Castéja and his sister Chantal Castéja Prében-Hansen; Philippe Castéja manages it. Since 1999, Christophe Dussutour has served as estate manager, whilst Valério Mortari has been cellar master since 2018.
