Domaine Coche Dury

The Coche-Dury estate is a family-run business based in Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune. Run by Raphaël Coche-Dury, it cultivates plots situated mainly in Meursault, supplemented in particular by vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie and Volnay. Its production consists mainly of Chardonnay whites and a smaller proportion of Pinot Noir reds.

Histoire du domaine

The origins of the Coche-Dury estate date back to the interwar period in Meursault. For a long time, a significant proportion of its production was sold in bulk to Burgundian wine merchants. From 1964 onwards, Georges Coche expanded the vineyard and steered the estate increasingly towards bottling on the premises. His son Jean-François subsequently took over the family business. In 1975, his marriage to Odile Dury led to the adoption of the name Coche-Dury. Jean-François gradually expanded the estate’s holdings, notably through the acquisition of plots in the climats of Meursault and in Volnay. Raphaël Coche-Dury joined the estate in 1997 and initially worked alongside his father. He is now solely responsible for the estate’s management, the running of the vineyard and the winemaking. The estate currently cultivates around 10.5 hectares under vine, with the majority of the land situated in the commune of Meursault.

Parcelle & terroir

Perrières

Perrières is a climat officially classified as Premier Cru of the Meursault appellation, distinct from the enclosed Clos des Perrières climat. Its regulatory boundary includes parts of the lieu-dits Les Perrières Dessus, Aux Perrières, and Les Perrières Dessous. The hillside features thin, very stony soils, locally with a steep slope, resting notably on oolitic limestones and Jurassic marls. Characteristics vary between the upper and lower sectors of the climat.

Meursault
Origin of the vineyard name
The term "Perrière" generally refers to an old quarry or land adjacent to a paved road. In Meursault, the name is consistent with the presence of an old quarry separating the Perrières-Dessus and Perrières-Dessous sectors.
Exposure
East to south-east depending on the documented sectors
Slope
Variable slope, locally steep in the middle of the hillside
Soil
Limestone to clay-limestone soils, thin, very stony, and locally marly
Subsoil and geology
Bathonian oolitic Chassagne limestone, limestone beds, and Jurassic marls

Histoire de la parcelle

The presence of an old limestone quarry has durably structured the site and explains its name. Perrières is among the climats of Meursault recognized for the "premier cru" mention, a classification officialized in 1943; its current parcel composition is specified by the AOC specifications.

One of the wines of the vintage, the magical 2001 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is even better than Coche's superb Corton-Charlemagne! Wafting from the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, citrus oil, freshly baked bread, white flowers and subtle hints of iodine and oyster shell, it's full-bodied, seamless and complete, with a satiny attack that segues into a deep, concentrated core, framed by imposing levels of chalky dry extract and underpinned by a tangy spine of acidity. At age 20, it is in its prime today.

Fresher and much tighter than the 2004. Fully open and bright. Long and rich on palate. Quite explosive. Crystalline. Maybe a little lighter than the 2004. The second bottle is much more open. Much richer than the first but less precise. The two bottles of this and the 2004 really demonstrated how much different bottles of the same fine wine can vary. And I don’t think this is by any means special to Coche-Dury.
