Histoire du domaine

The origins of the Coche-Dury estate date back to the interwar period in Meursault. For a long time, a significant proportion of its production was sold in bulk to Burgundian wine merchants. From 1964 onwards, Georges Coche expanded the vineyard and steered the estate increasingly towards bottling on the premises. His son Jean-François subsequently took over the family business. In 1975, his marriage to Odile Dury led to the adoption of the name Coche-Dury. Jean-François gradually expanded the estate’s holdings, notably through the acquisition of plots in the climats of Meursault and in Volnay. Raphaël Coche-Dury joined the estate in 1997 and initially worked alongside his father. He is now solely responsible for the estate’s management, the running of the vineyard and the winemaking. The estate currently cultivates around 10.5 hectares under vine, with the majority of the land situated in the commune of Meursault.

Parcelle & terroir

Corton Charlemagne (Aloxe Corton)

Corton-Charlemagne is a white Grand Cru appellation whose demarcated parcel area occupies the upper part of the montagne de Corton, across Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny. In Aloxe-Corton, its geographical core corresponds to the climat Le Charlemagne; the appellation also unites En Charlemagne and several neighboring climats. The vineyard is located between 280 and 330 meters, on steep slopes of 20 to 23%, with a predominantly southwest exposure at the appellation scale. The clay-rich marly soils rest on an alternation of limestone beds and marls, beneath a thin layer of rendzinas.

Histoire de la parcelle

A vineyard on the montagne de Corton was given in 775 by Charlemagne to the collegiate church of Saint-Andoche de Saulieu and remained part of its estate for approximately a millennium. The Corton-Charlemagne appellation was recognized by the decree of July 31, 1937. Its current parcel area is based on a delimitation approved by the INAO on September 20, 1984.

The 2002 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru was the one vintage that didn’t entirely meet my expectations. The wine offers up notes of lemon oil, mint, vanilla pod, white flowers and salty soil tones, followed by a full-bodied, ample wine with considerable substance but seemingly missing some of the cut, energy and coherence that even the less celebrated among these eleven vintages displayed. I wonder if it was a perfect bottle?

Ideal conditions for the vine. Great balance in the vines. The north wind kept the vines healthy. Very classic season and wine. Very good balance in the grapes as well as the vines. Ideal. For Raphael, 2002 was better balanced than the 2005, even though everyone talks about 2005s being a great year. Lovely minerality and struck match quality on the nose. The Coches have hardly tasted it because they are so sure of it and they just have it stashed away in the cellar. Liquorice and refinement but then great depth and weight follows it up. Great length. Dry finish but with great depth and richness beforehand. Wonderful aftertaste and persistence. Real life and elegance. Lovely texture plus depth – a great combination.
