Histoire du domaine
The Frapin family settled in 1270 in the vicinity of Segonzac, in Charente, where they initially worked as winegrowers. Anne-Catherine Frapin was the mother of François Rabelais, born in 1494, which places the writer within the family genealogy. In the 19th century, Henri Frapin completed the current appearance of the Château de Fontpinot by adding its three towers in 1872. Following the phylloxera crisis, Pierre Frapin replanted the vineyard; in 1898, he received an award from the Comice Agricole de Cognac for the restoration of his vines. In 1892, the framework of the Segonzac wine storehouse was constructed by Gustave Eiffel’s teams. In 1945, Albert Frapin expanded the vineyard around Château de Fontpinot. The house is now part of the Cointreau family through Renaud Cointreau SAS; Jean-Pierre Cointreau, Marie Frapin’s grandson, is its chairman. Patrice Piveteau, who joined Frapin in 1991, has been cellar master since 2011.

Histoire de la cuvée
Launched in 2005, Cuvée 1888 was created as a tribute to Pierre Frapin. It commemorates the selection of cuvees he made in 1888 for the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition, where the house won a gold medal, which is still kept at the estate. Its blend brings together old reserves from the Chai Paradis aged by several generations of the Frapin family.
