Histoire du domaine
According to the history published by the château, the name Villemaurine dates back to the 7th century, in the form ‘Ville Maure’. In the early 17th century, the estate belonged to Antoine Limouzin, chief clerk of the port of Libourne. Shortly before the Revolution, Jean Combret de Faurie, who also owned Château Soutard, undertook work there aimed at developing viticulture. On his death in 1804, his nephew Jacques Combret de Milon inherited his estate. Jean Laveau acquired the estate in 1811. Following his death in 1836, his plots were divided amongst his relatives, with Villemaurine then being farmed on a sharecropping basis. In 1872, the vineyard passed to Morange, Troquard and Pierre Jean; the 1874 edition of the Féret guide listed it as a ‘1er Cru de Saint-Émilion’. Raoul Passemard consolidated the vineyard in 1893. The Giraud family purchased the estate in 1970, after which the Union Française de Gestion became the owner in 1984, whilst granting a farming lease to the company Vignobles Robert Giraud. The Onclin family took over Villemaurine in 2005, undertook renovations to the vineyard and buildings, and produced their first vintage in 2007. Marie and Christophe Lefévère finally acquired the estate in 2021; Marie-Bénédicte Lefévère is responsible for winemaking.
