Histoire du domaine

The origin of the name Certan dates back to ancient times, whilst the history of the wine estate is linked to the de May family, of Scottish origin, who are said to have founded it in the 16th century. The estate adopted the name Vieux Château Certan in 1745, a date also recognised by the appellation’s governing body as the year the vineyard was established. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner and had the château renovated; its general appearance has been preserved. Georges Thienpont and his wife Joséphine acquired the property in the spring of 1924. On the death of Georges Thienpont in 1962, his son Léon took over the running of the estate. A significant portion of the vineyard was replanted following the frost of 1956, and a new winery was built in 1972. Alexandre Thienpont succeeded his father Léon in 1985. He subsequently worked alongside his son Guillaume, who has been involved in the technical management of the estate since 2011. Winemaking is now overseen by Guillaume Thienpont, at an estate that remains family-owned.

Widely regarded as one of the most unsatisfactory vintages of the period, this wine reflects the poor weather that created it. Macerated flowers save the aromas from being overly bold. Light body with a fresh and silky mid-palate, but an almost watery finish. Drink now.

Wine writer and fellow taster Colin Hay’s birth year. ‘Cold winter, bad weather during flowering which immediately reduced the crop. Cold June but a quite favourable July and August. The first two weeks of September were rainy, followed by a week of fine and sunny weather which lasted to the vintage that began at the beginning of October. On paper, the weather sounded better than it was. Sadly, the September rain was constant (20 days) and rot thrived more than the grapes.’ Rich nose and some depth but just starting to dry out. On the way down, alas.
