Histoire du domaine

The origins of the Troplong Mondot vineyard date back to the early 18th century. The present château was built in 1745 by Abbé Raymond de Sèze, around an existing vineyard. In 1850, Raymond-Théodore Troplong acquired the Mondot estate and contributed to its development; the name Troplong was subsequently associated with that of Mondot. Georges Thienpont became the owner in 1921, before selling the property during the 1930s. Alexandre Valette acquired it in 1936, marking the start of a period of family ownership that lasted more than eight decades. Christine Valette-Pariente managed the estate from 1981 until her death in 2014. In 2006, Troplong Mondot was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion classification. SCOR acquired Château Mondot SAS, the operator of Troplong Mondot, in 2017 and entrusted the management of the estate to Aymeric de Gironde. Rémy Monribot is currently in charge of technical management, and the vinification cellar was completely renovated in 2021.

This estate continues to merit substantial praise. Let’s hope in the upcoming revised Classification of the Wines of St.-Emilion, Troplong Mondot merits elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classe, which it has deserved for some time. Not far off the pace of the spectacular 2000, the 2001 is performing even better from bottle than it was from cask. A gorgeous perfume of plum jam, creme de cassis, flowers, licorice, black fruits, a hint of graphite, and well-integrated wood notes is followed by a medium to full-bodied St.-Emilion with superb texture, great flavor purity, and tremendous harmony as well as elegance. Remarkably approachable despite its impressive concentration and well-concealed tannin, this is a beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2017.

Feels distinctly cooler, slightly more vegetal on the nose. The palate lacks depth compared with 2000. Pleasant enough on the first taste but there’s not a lot behind it. Finishes a bit short.
