Histoire du domaine

The origins of the Troplong Mondot vineyard date back to the early 18th century. The present château was built in 1745 by Abbé Raymond de Sèze, around an existing vineyard. In 1850, Raymond-Théodore Troplong acquired the Mondot estate and contributed to its development; the name Troplong was subsequently associated with that of Mondot. Georges Thienpont became the owner in 1921, before selling the property during the 1930s. Alexandre Valette acquired it in 1936, marking the start of a period of family ownership that lasted more than eight decades. Christine Valette-Pariente managed the estate from 1981 until her death in 2014. In 2006, Troplong Mondot was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion classification. SCOR acquired Château Mondot SAS, the operator of Troplong Mondot, in 2017 and entrusted the management of the estate to Aymeric de Gironde. Rémy Monribot is currently in charge of technical management, and the vinification cellar was completely renovated in 2021.

Now reaching 20 years old, the 1996 Troplong-Mondot has a rather staid bouquet that is missing a sense of animation and terroir expression. It kind of just "sits there." The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a touch of chocolate and candied orange peel, nicely weighted in the mouth with a little more freshness on the finish than exhibited by the nose. This was not a great Saint Emilion vintage and this Troplong-Mondot cannot transcend that, but it gives modest drinking pleasure. Tasted July 2016.
