Histoire du domaine
The documented history of Sociando dates back to March 1633, when a deed mentions land belonging to a Basque aristocrat named Sociondo, near Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne. A document from 1750 subsequently refers to vineyards belonging to Anne de Sossiondo; variations in spelling gradually led to the name Sociando. In 1793, during the French Revolution, Guillaume de Brochon’s estate was seized and then sold at auction, before being acquired by his father-in-law, Jean Lamothe. In 1831, Marie-Elisabeth Alaret, Jean Lamothe’s niece and owner of the estate, married the naval officer Achille Mallet. The name Sociando-Mallet was then adopted. The Alaret family retained ownership until 1878, after which the estate passed, amongst others, into the hands of Léon Simon, the Delor wine merchants, Louis Roullet and Émile Tereygeol. Jean Gautreau bought the château in 1969, when it comprised just five hectares of vineyards. He gradually expanded the vineyard by acquiring neighbouring plots, renovated the buildings and developed the winery facilities. Sylvie Gautreau has managed the estate since 2015 and became its owner following Jean Gautreau’s death in October 2019. Winemaking is currently overseen by cellar master Arnaud Durand.
