Histoire du domaine
The estate’s first grape harvest took place in 1252, at a time when the land belonged to the de Goth family. Bertrand de Goth became Archbishop of Bordeaux before being elected Pope in 1305 under the name Clement V, to whom the château owes its name. After the French Revolution, church property was confiscated and the estate passed through the hands of several owners. In the 19th century, Jean-Baptiste Clerc expanded the vineyard. A severe hailstorm in 1937 contributed to the estate’s decline. Paul Montagne acquired it in 1939 and set about restoring it with the support of the oenologist Émile Peynaud. In 1959, Château Pape Clément’s red wines were classified among the Graves crus classés. Bernard Magrez took over the management of the estate in 1983, before becoming its owner in 1985. Under his ownership, the barrel cellar was brought into use in 2003 and the fermentation cellar was renovated in 2007. The vineyard now comprises plots of red and white grape varieties within the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
