Château Magdelaine

Château Magdelaine is a former Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, whose vineyard covered 11 hectares on the limestone plateau and the clay-limestone slopes of the appellation. Acquired in 1952 by Jean-Pierre Moueix, it was merged in 2012 with the neighbouring Château Bélair-Monange. Its former plots are now cultivated as part of this latter estate owned by the Moueix family.

Histoire du domaine

Château Magdelaine belonged to the Chatonnet family and their heirs for over two centuries. The estate established itself amongst the recognised wines of Saint-Émilion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was acquired in 1952 by Jean-Pierre Moueix, founder of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in Libourne. Under his ownership, the vineyard was replanted following damage caused by vine diseases and frost. Magdelaine was listed amongst the Premiers Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion in the appellation’s historic classifications. In 2012, the INAO formalised the merger of Château Magdelaine with Château Bélair-Monange, an adjoining estate also owned by the Moueix family. The name Magdelaine therefore no longer refers to an independent wine-growing estate; its plots have been incorporated into Bélair-Monange. The area of 11 hectares and the average production of 30,000 bottles previously stated by the Saint-Émilion authority should be regarded as historical data, rather than current figures for an independent producer.

Still evolving at a glacial pace, Magdelaine's 1975 remains a promising spicy, mineral-laden, muscular wine with plenty of extract, as well as a high level of tannin. The wine exhibits a dark garnet color with some amber at the edge. The nose offers up smoky, earthy aromas intermixed with plenty of sweet, highly extracted black fruits (particularly cherries). In the mouth, the wine is medium to full-bodied and powerful, with some astringent tannin noticeable in the finish. The wine leaves a hefty impression on the palate, particularly for the normally elegant, stylish Magdelaine, and will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring. I doubt that the tannin will ever fully dissipate, but this is an impressive, somewhat old style Bordeaux. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. Last tasted 10/96
