Histoire du domaine

The first recorded mention of Château La Dominique dates back to the late 16th century. In 1618, Dominique Glenne gave his name to the estate. The property subsequently passed to the Baillencourt family, who also owned Château Gazin. Château La Dominique was included amongst the Grands Crus Classés when the Saint-Émilion classification was established in 1955. Clément Fayat acquired the estate in 1969; the vineyard was then rebuilt and underwent a series of improvements. The Fayat family has owned the estate ever since, with Jean-Claude Fayat as the current owner. A new winery designed by the architect Jean Nouvel was inaugurated in 2014. Gwendeline Lucas is the managing director, Yann Monties is the technical director and Romain Sapet is the cellar master.

One of the most conspicuous over-achievers from Bordeaux's right bank appellations of St.-Emilion and Pomerol, La Dominique continues to fashion excellent wines that still represent fine value (although their prices are beginning to creep up). This wine may turn out to be even better than my rating indicates. The extremely saturated opaque blue/purple color is followed by aromas of sweet, overripe plum and cassis fruit, licorice, and toasty, smoky wood. Medium-bodied, big, and rich, with no greenness or harsh tannin, this is an excellent, dense, richly-endowed 1993 that will benefit from another 1-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2012.
