Histoire du domaine
The Fombrauge estate has been linked to the history of the Lords of Canolle since the 15th century, following the Hundred Years’ War. Its name derives from ‘fons brogiera’, an expression evoking a spring surrounded by heather and bushes. The first documented grape harvests date back to 1599. At the end of the 17th century, the estate passed to the Dumas family through marriage; Jacques Dumas, a counsellor at the Parliament of Guyenne, then contributed to the development of the estate. During the Revolution, the estate was seized as national property in 1794, before the heirs asserted their rights in 1808. Several owners succeeded one another during the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1987, the Bygodt family sold the property to the Danish wine merchant Hans Just. Bernard Magrez acquired Château Fombrauge in 1999 and undertook the renovation of the buildings, gardens, vineyard and winemaking facilities. The château was included in the Saint-Émilion Grands Crus Classés classification in 2012.
