Histoire du domaine
The Léglise family, originally from Libourne, founded the estate and played a part in establishing the Pomerol vineyard in the mid-18th century. The property appears in the 1741 land registry under the name Fazilleau. At the turn of the 19th century, whilst covering around 13 hectares, it was sold to a lawyer named Isambert, who gave it the name L’Évangile. In 1862, Paul Chaperon acquired the estate and had the Second Empire-style mansion built, which still stands on the property today. As early as 1868, the Cocks and Féret guide listed L’Évangile amongst the ‘Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol’. Following the death of Paul Chaperon around 1900, his descendants, the Ducasse family, retained ownership of the estate. Louis Ducasse took over the running of the estate in 1957, following the severe frosts of 1956, and his widow, Simone Ducasse, continued to manage it from 1982 onwards. In 1990, Simone Ducasse chose Baron Éric de Rothschild as the buyer, and the estate joined the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). Since 2020, Juliette Couderc has been managing the estate, whilst Olivier Trégoat serves as technical director for the DBR Lafite estates outside Pauillac and is directly involved in the decisions regarding blending and winemaking at L’Évangile.
