Histoire du domaine

The name Destieux derives from the hamlet of ‘Des Yeux’, situated on the heights of Saint-Hippolyte, from where the vineyard overlooks the Dordogne valley. The Dauriac family acquired Château Destieux in 1971. Christian Dauriac, an oenologist and biological scientist, carried out the first wine-making on this estate in 1976. The estate’s cellars and equipment were modernised in 1999. In 2006, the château was awarded Grand Cru Classé status in the Saint-Émilion classification. Christian Dauriac remains the owner of Vignobles Dauriac, which also comprises Château Montlisse in Saint-Émilion and Château La Clémence in Pomerol. Winemaking and technical management are now the responsibility of Baptiste Munné, technical director, cellar master and vineyard manager.

The 2014 Destieux has a rich and showy bouquet of mulberry, red plum and marmalade, a touch of alcohol just blurring the detail a little. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet tannin, cola-tinged red berry fruit, building in weight towards the finish that feels just a little cloying. Pleasant for a mouthful, but an entire bottle may well prove laborious.

James Suckling 88-89/100

An attractive and balanced wine with a medium body, fine tannis and a pretty finish.

Dark crimson. Aromatic and brooding with some oak in evidence. Non classic, this is almost painful to taste though is clearly stuffed to the gills with ambition. Very interesting! Almost tastes like a liqueur – quite high in alcohol. Was it picked especially late? Not for purists perhaps.
