Histoire du domaine
The origins of Desmirail date back to the late 17th century, when Marguerite Rauzan du Ribail married Jean-Baptiste Desmirail, after whom the estate is named. The estate forms part of the former Rauzan wine-growing estate, which was gradually divided into several properties in Margaux. At the time of the 1855 classification, Desmirail belonged to Joseph Théophile Sipière, who was also the estate manager at Château Margaux, and was classified as a third cru. Robert Mendelssohn, nephew of the composer Felix Mendelssohn, became the owner in the early 20th century. Martial Michel, a glove-maker, subsequently owned the estate from 1923 to 1938. After several decades during which Desmirail was part of Château Palmer, Lucien Lurton re-established the estate and acquired it in 1980. His son Denis Lurton took over the management of the estate in 1992 and began restructuring the vineyard and modernising the winemaking facilities. The estate practises sustainable viticulture and has been certified as having ‘High Environmental Value’ since the 2018 vintage. At the end of 2025, Thierry Lurton took over the company managing Desmirail, whilst Denis Lurton announced the sale of part of the vineyard.
