Château de Bligny Corton Grand Cru 1988 Magnum

The Château de Bligny Corton Grand Cru 1988 is a red Burgundy wine produced by Château de Bligny, originating from the Corton parcel in Aloxe-Corton. Classified as a Burgundy Grand Cru, it is made exclusively from Pinot Noir. The Corton appellation, whose production area notably includes the commune of Aloxe-Corton, allows its red wines to bear a specific climat of origin. This 1988 vintage thus embodies the identity of the great red crus of the Côte de Beaune.

Histoire du domaine

Château de Bligny stands on the site of a former feudal castle overlooking the village of Bligny and the Landion valley. The present residence was acquired in 1773 by the Marquis de Dampierre, who used it as a hunting lodge. In the early 19th century, the Baron de Cachard bought the estate and expanded its wine-growing operations, notably through the acquisition of vineyards from the former Sainte-Eulalie priory. These acquisitions form the basis of the current vineyard. On the baron’s death in 1930, his heirs took over a property then comprising 44 hectares of vineyards. During the Occupation, they left the château and the vineyard was left fallow. After the war, the estate was purchased by Mr Lefèvre, a winegrower from Touraine, but his plans for Champagne came to nothing and the property was broken up. The Gauthrin and Duval families bought back and replanted the vineyard in 1953, before the Lorin family took over the château and the vines in 1954. The Rapeneau family acquired the estate in 1999, restored the château and reorganised the production facilities. Christophe Rapeneau, chairman of the Château de Bligny SAS and head winemaker of the family group, is responsible for the winemaking process.

Parcelle & terroir

Corton [Rouge]

Corton is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically delimited terroir on the slopes of the Montagne de Corton, in the north of the Côte de Beaune. It does not constitute a single climat: red Corton can be followed by the name of one of the 24 climats authorized by the product specification. The plots are staggered across several slopes, with exposures ranging from east to south and then west, which explains a significant diversity of soils and characters. The area of 87.04 ha corresponds to the surface area in production declared as red in 2022, and not to the area of a single cadastral climat.

Vineyard commune
Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny et Pernand-Vergelesses

from east to south, then west
Altitude

Slope
variable; often steep in the upper half of the slope
Soil
Shallow and well-draining soils, rich in clay, sometimes very stony at the bottom of the slope; silty soils, low in fertility and sensitive to erosion higher up.
Subsoil and geology
Jurassic sedimentary formations: Dalle nacrée limestones and colluvium in the lower part, then clayey limestones and Upper Jurassic marls rich in silica, with chert, fine sands and silts; summit cornice of hard limestone.

Histoire de la parcelle

The presence of vines on the Montagne de Corton is attested as early as the early Middle Ages, notably through the donation of vineyards made in 775 by Charlemagne to the collegiate church of Saulieu. In the 12th century, the Abbey of Cîteaux owned an estate in Aloxe comprising vineyards in Clos de Courthon, while the Dukes of Burgundy held the future Clos du Roi. In 1855, Jules Lavalle classified Corton among the "out-of-line wines"; the commune of Aloxe added the name of the cru to its own in 1862. The Corton appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognized on July 31, 1937, and its parcel area was notably approved by the INAO on September 20, 1984.
