Histoire du domaine
The name Climens appears in a deed dated 1547, when Guirault Roborel, the King’s procurator in Barsac, inherited the land. The Roborel family of Climens subsequently established the estate and developed the vineyard there for over two and a half centuries; the Carthusian monastery was built in the 17th century. Following the French Revolution, the property was sold in 1802 to the Bordeaux wine merchant Jean Binaud. Under the leadership of Éloi Lacoste, Château Climens was classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 classification. From 1885 onwards, it belonged to the Gounouilhou family for nearly a century. Lucien Lurton acquired the estate in 1971, and his daughter Bérénice Lurton took over its management in 1992. In 2010, Bérénice Lurton and technical director Frédéric Nivelle began converting the vineyard to biodynamic farming. The estate produced its first dry white wine in 2018. In 2022, the Moitry family took over from the Lurton family through Patrimonia Développement. Frédéric Nivelle, technical director since 1998, remains in charge of the vineyard and the winery.
