Histoire du domaine

The estate’s origins date back to the early 18th century, when Mr Gressier settled, from 1720 onwards, on a gravelly hillock in the hamlet of Grand-Poujeaux. The property was divided in 1820 following a partition of jointly owned land: one part remained with the Gressier family, whilst a vineyard passed to the Castaing branch. In 1863, Rosa Ferrière, widow of Castaing, gave the estate the name Chasse-Spleen. The precise origin of this name is the subject of several accounts; the estate notably mentions the possible influence of Odilon Redon and the anecdote linked to Lord Byron. In 1912, the Segnitz family, German wine merchants, acquired the property, which was subsequently confiscated following the First World War. Prosper Lahary became the owner in 1922; under this family’s ownership, the château notably acquired an underground wine cellar in 1964. Jacques Merlaut acquired Château Chasse-Spleen in 1976. His daughter Bernadette Villars subsequently ran the estate, after which Claire Villars-Lurton succeeded her. Céline Villars-Foubet took over as chair in 2000, whilst Jean-Pierre Foubet took on the role of managing director. In 2023, the Château Brillette vineyard was incorporated into the Chasse-Spleen estate.

This wine has everything in its aromatics and attack, and very little at the back of the mouth - not a good sign for long-term aging. It possesses a dark ruby/purple color, and black currant fruit intermixed with smoke and weediness. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Round and ripe nose. Rather brutal tannins. Perfectly respectable but still a little raw. Fresh and surprisingly unevolved.
