Histoire du domaine
The history of Château Cantenac Brown is linked to John Lewis Brown of Colstun, a Bordeaux wine merchant of Scottish origin, who acquired the estate at auction in 1806. The estate then took the name Brown and became part of the Cantenac wine-growing landscape. It was classified as a third grand cru in the 1855 Médoc wine classification. Financial difficulties faced by the Brown family led to the sale of the estate in 1843 to the banker Gromard. In 1860, Armand Lalande bought the estate, gave it its definitive name of Cantenac Brown and undertook major works, including the construction of the neo-Tudor-style château and the wine cellar designed by the architect Ernest Minvielle. The estate remained in the Lalande and then Lawton families until 1968. The Compagnie du Midi acquired it in 1987, before it was integrated into the AXA Group two years later. After a period of ownership by Simon Halabi, the château was acquired in 2019 by the Le Lous family. José Sanfins, managing director and winemaker, has been in charge of the estate’s technical management ever since.
