Histoire du domaine
Vines are recorded as having existed on the site of the present vineyard as early as 1596, when they belonged to Jean Despagnet. The de Canolle de Lescours family subsequently owned Bélair from 1688 to 1916. In the 18th century, mixed farming gradually disappeared from the plateau; by 1752, the land was entirely devoted to vineyards and the present château was built during this period. Confiscated during the Revolution, the estate was returned to the Canolle family in 1802, the year in which Château Bélair bottled its own wine for the first time. In 1850, Cocks & Féret ranked Bélair at the top of the Saint-Émilion premiers crus. Édouard Dubois and his wife Marie Challon acquired the estate in 1916; their family retained ownership until the early 2000s. Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, which had owned the neighbouring Château Magdelaine since 1952, acquired Château Bélair in 2008 through Christian and Édouard Moueix. The estate was then renamed Bélair-Monange, in memory of Adèle Moueix, née Monange. In 2012, the INAO formalised the merger of Bélair-Monange and Magdelaine into a single estate. New cellars, where the first winemaking will take place in September 2022, are due to be inaugurated in June 2023; Laurent Descos serves as cellar master there, alongside Éric Murisasco, the technical director.
