Histoire du domaine
Endo Shuzojo was founded in 1864 by Tokusaburo Endo as a brewery supplying the feudal domain of Suzaka and its lord. The house has since remained in the hands of the Endo family, with successive generations maintaining the founder's ambition to produce quality sake. In the 1970s, the small brewery went through a difficult period and did not fully benefit from the national sake boom. In 1982, Hidesaburo Endo took over the business at the age of 21 as the representative of the sixth generation; it then had only three employees. He set out to renew the range, launching Keiryu in 1988, followed by Asashibori, Domuroku, Naotora, and Char. The house won the Nagano Governor's Prize at the prefectural sake competition in 1993, followed by a gold medal at the Monde Selection in 2004. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2014. The Char brand, written "彗" in reference to comets, was created in 2017. Under the direction of toji Shin Takano, Char Donati Hatsugumi Junmai Ginjo was released among its first cuvées and received the highest gold medal at the Wine Glass de Oishii Nihonshu Award in 2018. The house remains led by Hidesaburo Endo, while Shin Takano is identified by the producer and the Nagano prefectural competition as the head brewer.
