Domaine Chapoutier

A family-run business based in Tain-l’Hermitage, M. Chapoutier is a producer-merchant with deep historical roots in the northern Rhône. Led by Michel Chapoutier, the company cultivates vineyards in several French regions and abroad, whilst producing wines notably in the major Rhône appellations. Its own vineyards are managed using biodynamic methods.

Histoire du domaine

The company’s origins date back to 1808, with the founding of Calvet et Compagnie on Rue de l’Hermitage in Tain. In 1897, Marius Chapoutier went into partnership with Rodolphe Delépine to form Delépine et Chapoutier, which at that time exported its wines to the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Following Delépine’s departure in 1922, Marius renamed the company Chapoutier et Compagnie. In 1928, he acquired the La Ciboise estate, then in 1929 had a new winery built at the foot of the Hermitage hill. On his death in 1937, his son Marc succeeded him. In 1955, Marc renamed the company M. Chapoutier. Michel Chapoutier took over the management of the company in 1990, having launched the first single-vineyard selections in 1989. The conversion of the vineyard to biodynamic farming began at that time. Under his leadership, the company gradually acquired estates and vineyards in Australia from 1998, in Roussillon in 2000, in Portugal in 2007, and subsequently in Alsace and Spain, amongst other places. Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier have joined Michel and Corinne Chapoutier in the family business; Clément Bartschi currently serves as cellar master there.

Cuvée

Agly Brothers

Agly Brothers is a red wine marketed by M. Chapoutier in the AOC Côtes-du-Roussillon Villages. This cuvée combines Syrah and Grenache from distinct parcels located on the hillsides of the upper Agly valley. It is the result of a collaboration between the Laughton and Chapoutier families.

Style of the cuvée
A powerful and concentrated red wine with ripe black fruit, an ample and silky texture, and smooth tannins, featuring extended aging aimed at a discreet integration of spicy and roasted notes.
Position within the range
Laughton-Chapoutier collaboration cuvée, distinct from the wines marketed under the Bila-Haut and Domaine de Bila-Haut brands.

Histoire de la cuvée

Following their Australian collaboration on La Pléiade, Elva and Ron Laughton and Corinne and Michel Chapoutier continued their partnership in France, in the Agly valley, with Agly Brothers.
