Champagne Dom Perignon 1985

Champagne Dom Pérignon 1985 is a vintage white champagne from Moët et Chandon, crafted in Champagne from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Classified as a Champagne Grand Cru, it pairs a ripe and developed expression with a still-tensed freshness. The Wine Advocate awards it 95/100 and recommends drinking between 2005 and 2030; Jancis Robinson rates it 17.5/20, with a window from 1995 to 2020. Critics describe a rich and complex profile, marked by orchard fruits, brioche, citrus, smoke, and a refined mousse.

Histoire du domaine

Claude Moët founded his wine merchant’s business in Épernay in 1743. His grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët, subsequently developed overseas markets and contributed to the company’s international expansion. In 1816, Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles became his business partner. When Jean-Rémy Moët retired from the business in 1833, the company was passed on to his son Victor Moët-Romont and his son-in-law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon de Briailles. It then took the name Moët & Chandon. During the 19th century, the house significantly increased its shipments and commercial presence. It is now part of the LVMH group, within MHCS. Benoît Gouez has served as cellar master there since 2005.

Cuvée

Dom Pérignon

Dom Pérignon is a prestige cuvée produced exclusively as a vintage champagne, with certain years possibly not declared. Always a blend, it seeks harmony between the character of the vintage and the signature of the house. The Vintage benefits from at least eight years of aging before its release.

Origin of the cuvée name
The cuvée is named after Dom Pierre Pérignon, cellarer of the Hautvillers Abbey from 1668, whose creative ambition and pursuit of excellence it claims.
Cuvée creation year
1921
Style of the cuvée
Blended vintage champagne striving above all for harmony, featuring a general profile marked by precision, intensity, a tactile dimension, minerality, and the complexity acquired through long maturation on lees.
Position within the range
Historical prestige cuvée, today an autonomous house and the pinnacle of the vintage champagne offering within Moët Hennessy.

Histoire de la cuvée

Created by Moët & Chandon starting from the 1921 harvest, Dom Pérignon was first marketed in 1936. Historically presented as the "Cuvée Dom Pérignon" of Moët & Chandon, it is now developed as a distinct House within Moët Hennessy.

Drunk from a pristinely preserved original disgorgement, the 1985 Dom Pérignon is inviting and exuberant, bursting with aromas of apples, pears, buttered toast, orange oil, tarte tatin and smoke. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and pillowy, with a generous core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and a refined mousse. This bottle ranked a step behind a sublime magnum of this cuvée's P3 rendition that I enjoyed earlier in the year, but it was nonetheless an exquisite Champagne. In both cases, the 1985 is in its prime, so now is a great time to open bottles.

Obviously quite old from the deep gold and the developed, biscuity nose. I thought it was from the 1980s when it was served blind. But it is still quite tangy and tense, managing to combine both richness and acidity. Not voluptuous in any way. I wonder whether it will ever relax and really open out?
