Histoire du domaine
Local archives mention the Mellot family as early as 1513 among the winemakers and wine merchants of Sancerre. In 1698, under Louis XIV, César Mellot was appointed wine advisor to the King. In the early 19th century, Alphonse Mellot opened an inn in Sancerre where he promoted local wines; in 1881, a license allowed the firm to ship its wines across France and abroad. Since that time, the eldest son of each generation has been named Alphonse. In 1983, Alphonse Mellot senior significantly reduced the négociant activity to refocus the family business on its own terroirs. A graduate in oenology, Alphonse Mellot Junior joined the estate in 1991, gradually taking over technical management and vinification responsibilities. He developed single-plot vinification, particularly around La Moussière, and transitioned the vineyard to organic and then biodynamic viticulture. The Sancerre estate thus reached 58 hectares, complemented separately by Domaine des Pénitents, located near La Charité-sur-Loire.
Les Romains
Les Romains is a distinct white Sancerre, made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc from a parcel planted in 1951 on flint and limestone soils. Its identity is based on a particularly mineral expression of the terroir, combining richness, freshness, and precision.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name refers to a site linked to the Roman presence, from where Caesar's army is said to have controlled the Roman road crossing the Loire.
- Style of the cuvée
- A rich and structured white Sancerre, marked by a strong mineral expression of flint, precise freshness, and a broad, complex palate.
