Histoire du domaine
The name Quinta do Noval first appears in land registers in 1715. In 1894, the Port wine merchant António José da Silva acquired the estate, which had been affected by phylloxera, and set about replanting the vineyard. His son-in-law, Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, subsequently transformed the old narrow terraces into wider ones in order to change the estate’s cultivation methods. Quinta do Noval became particularly well known for its decision to declare the 1931 Vintage Port and Nacional Vintage Port, at a time when most houses did not declare that vintage. The estate became part of the AXA Millésimes portfolio in 1993. In the 1990s, around one hundred hectares were replanted using a cultivation method suited to the individual plots. In 1997, the opening of a bottling and distribution facility in Alijó, near Pinhão, enabled operations to be centralised in the Douro Valley. Dry Douro wines have been produced under the Quinta do Noval name since the 2004 vintage. AXA Millésimes acquired Quinta do Passadouro, reported to cover 36 hectares, in 2019. Carlos Agrellos succeeded his uncle António Agrellos as head of winemaking at the end of 2017.
