Histoire du domaine
The lands of Santa Lucia in Faulle, in Panzano in Chianti, have belonged to the di Napoli Rampolla family since 1739. Until the mid-20th century, they were worked by farmers and sharecroppers, with activities combining wine, cereals and livestock farming. In 1965, Alceo di Napoli Rampolla inherited the farm from his father and, together with his wife Livia Borgia, set about transforming it into a wine estate. The first vineyard was planted in 1968. The estate’s first Chianti Classico was produced from the 1975 vintage. With the support of oenologist Giacomo Tachis, Alceo then introduced Cabernet Sauvignon to an area that was at the time mainly devoted to Sangiovese; the Sammarco was launched in 1980. A high-density Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, later intended for the D’Alceo, was planted in 1991. The transition to biodynamic farming began in 1994, spearheaded by Maurizia and Luca di Napoli Rampolla, who now run the estate. D’Alceo, the estate’s first biodynamic wine, has been produced since 1996. The estate also began experimenting with winemaking and ageing in terracotta amphorae in 2008.
