Histoire du domaine
The Antinori family’s wine-making history is conventionally dated to 1385, the year in which Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri, the Florentine guild of wine merchants and producers. The family has retained direct control of this business across twenty-six generations. In 1506, Niccolò di Tommaso Antinori acquired the palace in Florence that still bears the name Palazzo Antinori. In the 20th century, Piero Antinori took over the management of the family business in 1966. Under his leadership, the company expanded its wine estates beyond its historic roots in Chianti Classico, notably into Tuscany, Umbria and other wine-producing regions and countries. Renzo Cotarella joined Castello della Sala in 1979 before becoming managing director, then chief executive and head winemaker at Marchesi Antinori. Today, Piero Antinori is honorary chairman and his daughters Albiera, Allegra and Alessia are involved in running the family business. Renzo Cotarella remains the group’s head winemaker.
Solaia
Solaia is crafted from a selection of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sangiovese from its eponymous vineyard at Tenuta Tignanello. Created with the 1978 vintage, it is produced only in years deemed exceptional. The lots are vinified and aged separately before final blending.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The wine takes its name from the Solaia vineyard, located in the sunniest part of the Tenuta Tignanello hillside.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1978
- Style of the cuvée
- A great Tuscan blended red, concentrated and structured, seeking a balance between fruit depth, freshness, refined tannins, and complexity. Parcel- and variety-specific vinification as well as aging in French oak support an elegant, powerful style capable of long aging.
- Position within the range
- One of the two emblematic and most prestigious wines of Tenuta Tignanello, alongside Tignanello.
Histoire de la cuvée
The Antinori family produced Solaia for the first time with the 1978 vintage, in an initial blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was repeated in 1979. Sangiovese was introduced in subsequent years, and the proportions of the Cabernets were progressively adjusted. Certain vintages, including 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1992, were not produced.
