Histoire du domaine
H. William Harlan founded Harlan Estate in 1984, after searching for a hillside terroir in Napa Valley and being inspired by a trip to Burgundy and Bordeaux in 1980. He established a wooded estate on the western slopes of Oakville, above the Oakville Benchlands. The estate now covers 97 hectares, of which only 17 hectares are planted with vines. The vineyards, established from the mid-1980s onwards, consist of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The first wines were produced from 1987 onwards, but the 1987, 1988 and 1989 vintages were not released for sale. The first wine to be released was the 1990 vintage, launched in 1996. Bob Levy, who has been involved since the project’s inception, is the estate’s founding winemaker, whilst Don Weaver was its founding director. Cory Empting, who joined in 2001, is now the winemaker at Harlan Estate. Will Harlan, the founder’s son, is now managing director, whilst Bill Harlan remains the founder of the family business.
