Histoire du domaine

The history of the Romanée-Conti vineyard dates back to the Priory of Saint-Vivant, founded in the early 10th century, which owned land in Vosne during the Middle Ages. The future vineyard was known as the Cros des Cloux before being leased in perpetuity to Claude Cousin in 1584. It then passed to Jacques Venot in 1621, and subsequently to the de Croonembourg family; the name ‘Romanée’ first appears in historical records in 1651. In 1760, Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, acquired the Romanée, with which his name remains associated. The vineyard was confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently sold at auction in 1794. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought La Romanée-Conti in 1869 and merged it with other wine-growing estates he already owned. Following a series of family transfers, the Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was incorporated on 31 July 1942, when Henri Leroy acquired Jacques Chambon’s shares. The estate acquired La Tâche in 1933, vineyards in Montrachet in 1963, and became the tenant of Romanée-Saint-Vivant Marey-Monge in 1966, before the partners acquired it in 1984. It also took on a lease for 2.2746 hectares of Corton in 2008, then entered into a sharecropping arrangement for 2.9132 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 2018. Since 2021, the estate has been co-managed by Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal; Alexandre Bernier oversees the cellar and winemaking.

Parcelle & terroir

Montrachet

Montrachet is a physically delimited climat and Grand Cru appellation shared between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Its vines occupy a narrow, elongated strip, perpendicular to the slope, in a slight concavity in the lower part of the east- and southeast-facing hillside. The terroir combines red, clayey, calcareous, and very stony soils with Jurassic substrates differentiated by a fault. Its rapid drainage and nocturnal air drainage limit humidity and frost risks.

Puligny-Montrachet et Chassagne-Montrachet
Origin of the vineyard name
The name comes from "Mont Rachet," understood as "bald mountain" or "barren mountain," probably referring to the sparsely vegetated promontory overlooking the site; "râche" is a regional term designating ringworm or scurf.

Histoire de la parcelle

The cru is attested as early as the 13th century in the form "Mont Rachaz." It truly took off in the 18th century under the impetus of the Clermont-Montoison family, lords of Chagny, and Thomas Jefferson placed it on par with Chambertin in 1787. Puligny and Chassagne appended the name Montrachet to their village names in 1878. A Beaune court ruling defined the appellation of origin in 1921, and the Montrachet AOC was subsequently recognized on July 31, 1937.

Attentive and wealthy readers will note that I have revised my original, barrel sample-based score for the Domaine de la Romanee Conti's 1995 Montrachet (a 95-97+ in Issue #110). Simply put, this is a mind-boggling, virtually perfect wine. It displays breath-taking aromas of liquid minerals, creamed hazelnuts, candied chestnuts (marrons glaces), white flowers, anise, and buttered toast that seem to gain in expressiveness and intensity with time. On its utterly extraordinary palate layer upon layer of stones, straw, minerals, grilled bread, and sweet white flowers can be found. Oily, full-bodied, magnificently concentrated, and extracted, this is as complex a wine as I have ever had the honor to pour over my lips and palate. Perfectly balanced and structured for the long haul, this wine also possesses one of the longest and purist finishes I have ever encountered. A winemaking tour de force! Projected maturity: 2008-2025. The few men and women that have the contacts and resources to acquire the world's most esteemed white wine from one of this planet's most famous estates are very fortunate. Aubert de Villaine, the Domaine's director, has fashioned two extraordinary Montrachets that will be talked about, compared, fawned over, and hopefully drunk over the next few decades by those worthy and deserving enough. Tasting the 1995 and 1996 offerings is an unforgettable experience. Importer: Wilson Daniels, St. Helena, CA; (707) 963-9661.

Savoury nose – absolutely nothing to do with sweetness, fruit, or flowers – just masculine edge of oak forest. Vegetation and undergrowth – the sort of wine which, served absolutely blind, might be taken for a red wine. Jewel bright texture and very, very youthful acidity and balance. Great peacocks tail of growing flavour intensity on the finish. Still very youthful. Quite marked acidity.
