Histoire du domaine

Domaine Ramonet was founded in Chassagne-Montrachet by Pierre Ramonet in the late 1920s. In the early days, Pierre Ramonet bought grapes, vinified them and then sold the wines. He gradually acquired plots of land around Chassagne-Montrachet; part of the Ruchottes came under the estate’s ownership in 1934. His son André continued to develop the family business. Pierre’s grandsons, Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet, subsequently became involved in the estate’s operations and ensured its continuity. After the 2013 harvest, Noël Ramonet withdrew from day-to-day operations to tend his own vines and supply his grapes to Jean-Claude Ramonet. Jean-Claude Ramonet has since taken charge of winemaking and marketing under his own name, whilst maintaining the estate’s established practices. SCEA Domaine Ramonet remains active in Chassagne-Montrachet; its partners include the family-run businesses of Noël and Jean-Claude Ramonet, whilst Jean-Claude Ramonet is the managing director. Since 2024, Pierre-François and Michaël Ramonet have also been managing directors of this company.

Parcelle & terroir

Montrachet

Montrachet is a physically delimited climat and Grand Cru appellation shared between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Its vines occupy a narrow, elongated strip, perpendicular to the slope, in a slight concavity in the lower part of the east- and southeast-facing hillside. The terroir combines red, clayey, calcareous, and very stony soils with Jurassic substrates differentiated by a fault. Its rapid drainage and nocturnal air drainage limit humidity and frost risks.

Origin of the vineyard name
The name comes from "Mont Rachet," understood as "bald mountain" or "barren mountain," probably referring to the sparsely vegetated promontory overlooking the site; "râche" is a regional term designating ringworm or scurf.

Histoire de la parcelle

The cru is attested as early as the 13th century in the form "Mont Rachaz." It truly took off in the 18th century under the impetus of the Clermont-Montoison family, lords of Chagny, and Thomas Jefferson placed it on par with Chambertin in 1787. Puligny and Chassagne appended the name Montrachet to their village names in 1878. A Beaune court ruling defined the appellation of origin in 1921, and the Montrachet AOC was subsequently recognized on July 31, 1937.

I had the opportunity to re-taste Ramonet's 1995 Montrachet with my Washington, DC tasting group, the Wine Nerds, in December, 1997. It is displaying lively, fresh aromas of minerals, pears, spice and, with time, spearmint. On the palate this wine has superb concentration, extraction, breadth, and powerful toasty oak, poached pears spiced with cloves and juniper berries, and stones. At this stage in its evolution it is rather disjointed, its flavor profile dominated by alcohol and oak, but all the elements are there for future greatness. Although it requires a minimum of 7-8 years for its core of fruit to evolve, it will easily last until 2025. The price is taken from the 1995 white Burgundy report.
