Histoire du domaine

Domaine Léon Barral is situated in Lenthéric, in the Hérault department, on the schist-rich slopes of the Faugères appellation. Before the family took over, the estate’s grapes were delivered to the co-operative. In 1993, Didier Barral took over the estate with his brother Jean-Luc, and they began making wine on the estate. Didier Barral then gradually developed a system of organic mixed farming and livestock rearing, suited to shallow schist soils prone to drought and erosion. In particular, the vines are trained using the goblet system, and livestock play a part in the farm’s agronomic management. The estate also uses cover crops, organic matter inputs and measures designed to encourage beneficial wildlife. A document detailing the estate’s operations in 2023 indicates a total area of 130 hectares, of which 49 hectares are planted with vines, with an average yield of 20 to 30 hl/ha. Didier Barral is now recognised as the owner of the estate and oversees the winemaking process directly.

Cuvée

Jadis

Jadis is a red cuvée marketed under the AOP Faugères by Domaine Léon Barral. It blends Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache from schist soils, followed by extended aging in barrels. It is distinguished from the estate's generic Faugères by the significant presence of Syrah and its barrel aging.

Cuvée creation year
1993
Style of the cuvée
A deep and structured red wine, combining ripe dark fruits, spices, and garrigue, with an assertive tannic structure, freshness, and a controlled rustic character.
Position within the range
An intermediate and iconic red cuvée, positioned between the estate's Faugères and Valinière.

Histoire de la cuvée

A 1993 vintage of Jadis is documented, the year Didier Barral created his private cellar and developed estate bottling. The cuvée still features in the range alongside the red Faugères and Valinière.

Tasted blind. Blackish ruby with some evolution at the rim. Does not smell clean. Some microbial spoilage? Tart and volatile on the palate.
