Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, following his marriage to Geneviève Quanquin, who came from a family that owned vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. Georges Roumier then settled in the village and gradually developed the family estate in the Côte de Nuits. He was one of the winemakers who bottled their own wines on the estate, at a time when this practice was still relatively uncommon. His son Jean-Marie officially succeeded him in 1961. In the 1950s, the estate expanded to include vineyards in Bonnes-Mares and the Clos de la Bussière in Morey-Saint-Denis, a 2.59-hectare plot acquired in 1953. A plot of Corton-Charlemagne was added to the estate in 1968. Jean-Marie Roumier then acquired a plot of Musigny Grand Cru in 1978. Christophe Roumier, a graduate in oenology, joined his father in the early 1980s, and the entire harvest has been bottled at the estate since the 1983 vintage. Since Jean-Marie’s retirement in 1990, Christophe Roumier has managed the estate and overseen the winemaking. The estate has also strengthened its independence by purchasing vineyards previously farmed under lease or sharecropping arrangements, notably in Charmes-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. Chemical fertilisers were phased out in 1988, followed by herbicides in 1989; however, the estate is not certified organic.

Parcelle & terroir

Bonnes-Mares

Bonnes-Mares is a physically delineated Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits, split between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, with the largest portion located in Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard forms approximately a rectangle south of Clos de Tart, on a gently sloping hillside with an easterly exposure. The light, gravelly, brown to reddish soils containing clay with flint rest on Jurassic limestone and white marl.

Origin of the vineyard name
Name attested since the late Middle Ages, of uncertain etymology. The BIVB favors the hypothesis of the old verb "marer", meaning to cultivate with care, rather than a reference to mother goddesses.

Histoire de la parcelle

The vineyard has been known as Bonnes-Mares since the late Middle Ages. The appellation of origin was recognized by the decree of December 8, 1936. Its production parcel area was subsequently approved by the INAO during the sessions of July 24, 1965 and June 1-2, 1988.

Opening in the glass with aromas of ripe red fruits, rose petals, peonies, orange rind and exotic spices, Roumier's 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is full-bodied, multidimensional and concentrated, with a rich and layered mid-palate, a muscular chassis of powdery tannin and a bright, mineral finish. This is very much built for the long haul, but it has taken the warm vintage in its stride.

‘Terres rouges’ is very close to the northern limit, with Morey. ‘Terres blanches’ (ie lots of limestone) is above the path that dissects Bonnes Mares. Roumier had three parcels from far north to far south. Pruning identical. In 2016 he was able to include for the first time the fruit from an extra hectare (2.5 acres) of land owned by Ficofi (planted in 1995) on marly soil and this has increased the ‘saltiness’ of this wine, thinks Roumier, because two-thirds of their vines are on marl with lots of active lime, the other third on rock with clay and pebbles. Now they have six different parcels. Around 65% whole bunch. Barrel sample taken from a 2012 barrel.Deep, ripe fruit, very ripe but not overripe. Almost savoury/smoky. Much drier than I expected, a dark rocky quality that reins in the fruit that seemed so ripe on the nose. Dark and rocky, stony but not drying. Just all corseted. Long, with dynamic tension. Less obvious than some. More ‘robust’ than Ruchottes. More embryonic. Dark and hidden.
