Its 22-hectare vineyard is spread across the communes of Puéchabon, Aniane, Saint-Jean-de-Fos and Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian, in the Terrasses du Larzac region. Histoire du domaine

The estate takes its name from the abandoned hamlet of Montcalmès, situated on a plateau overlooking the Hérault valley, from which part of the paternal family originates. The family estate originally comprised 30 hectares of vineyards, the harvest from which was delivered to the cooperative winery. In 1998, Jean-Marie Pourtalié and his son Frédéric decided to set up their own winery in order to produce their own wine. The first red wine was produced in 1999, amounting to 5,000 bottles. Muriel Fabre, Frédéric Pourtalié’s sister, joined the estate in 2003. The first white wine was produced in 2004. The estate began the transition to organic farming in 2012. The entire production has been certified organic since the 2015 vintage. The estate is now run by Frédéric Pourtalié and Muriel Fabre, with Frédéric personally overseeing the winemaking process.

One of my favorite estates in the Languedoc is unquestionably that of the young Frederic Poutalie. His 2014 Terrasses du Larzac was tasted as a barrel sample, but shows loads of promise. Black raspberries, cassis, spice, saddle leather and garrigue characteristics all flow to a full-bodied, pure, polished red that has gorgeously sweet fruit and a great finish. It should shine right out of the gate, yet keep for a decade or more. The blend is 60% Syrah, 20% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that will see two years in a mix of once-, twice-used and older barrels.

60% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre. Juicy red berry fruits, more than a touch of oak spice, milk chocolate and pepper. Rather delicate structure, and struggles with the oak influence, but there is superb fruit flavour beneath. Has the same brooding spiciness of great Rhône blends – almost as if influenced by north and south.
