Histoire du domaine
The origins of the Domaine de Chevalier date back to the mid-16th century, when the de Lalanne family managed an agricultural estate at a place known as Chivaley, comprising, in particular, vineyards, woodland and farmland. The family sold the property in 1736 to Jean Destang, a merchant from Léognan. After several changes of ownership, the vineyard fell into decline and the vines disappeared in 1813, giving way to woodland and heathland. Arnaud and Jean Ricard acquired the estate in 1865; Jean Ricard is described by the estate as the founder of its modern development. His son-in-law, Gabriel Beaumartin, subsequently helped to raise the profile of Chevalier’s wines abroad. Claude Ricard took over the management of the estate in 1948. Under his leadership, the Domaine de Chevalier was included amongst the Grands Crus Classés de Graves in the 1953 classification. The Bernard family acquired the estate in 1983 and entrusted its management to Olivier Bernard. Since then, the vineyard has been expanded and the facilities have been renovated and extended, notably with cellars built or refurbished between 1984 and 2016. In 2021, the estate began converting all its vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming practices; Kevin Chapon currently serves as cellar master there.
