Domain Christophe Roumier Ruchottes Chambertin 1999 Bottle (75cl) SD

Domaine Christophe Roumier Ruchottes-Chambertin 1999 is a red Burgundy Grand Cru from the Gevrey-Chambertin area, made exclusively from Pinot Noir. This cuvée comes from the Ruchottes-Chambertin parcel, where the estate farms 0.5436 hectares on an east-facing slope between 285 and 300 meters of altitude. The stony soil and very rocky clay-limestone subsoil characterize this lieu-dit. The wine is vinified using hand harvesting, hand sorting, native yeasts, and partial destemming.

Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in 1924, when Georges Roumier married Geneviève Quanquin, who came from a family that owned vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. Georges Roumier then expanded the estate and introduced on-site bottling, at a time when the wine merchant sector still largely dominated the industry. His son Jean-Marie officially succeeded him in 1961. During the 1950s, the estate expanded, notably with vineyards in Bonnes-Mares and the Clos de la Bussière in Morey-Saint-Denis, acquired in 1953. A plot of Corton-Charlemagne was acquired in 1968; it produced its first vintage under the name Jean-Marie Roumier in 1974. Christophe Roumier, a graduate in oenology, joined his father in 1981. From the 1983 vintage onwards, the entire harvest has been bottled at the estate. Since Jean-Marie Roumier’s retirement in 1990, Christophe Roumier has managed the estate, whilst his sister Delphine plays an active role in the family business. He personally oversees the winemaking process; the estate’s practices include hand-harvesting, the use of indigenous yeasts and ageing in a limited proportion of new oak. The vineyard covers approximately 12.5 hectares, a significant portion of which is farmed under a family lease.

Parcelle & terroir

Ruchottes-Chambertin

Ruchottes-Chambertin is a physically delimited climat and a Grand Cru appellation in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, comprising the lieux-dits Ruchottes du Bas and Ruchottes du Dessus. Situated on the slope above the piedmont and higher up than the Chambertin vineyard, it benefits from an eastward exposure and a moderate slope. Its shallow, stony, and highly well-draining soils rest on fractured Bathonian limestones.

Histoire de la parcelle

The name "Ruchottes" appears in the archives of Gevrey in the 16th century, and the site appears to have already been planted with vines at that time. Its reputation seems to have been established by the 18th century; in 1855, Jules Lavalle classified the upper part as a first cuvée and the lower part as a second cuvée. A judgment by the Dijon court in 1931 recognized the appellation of origin and its boundaries, and the AOC Ruchottes-Chambertin was officially recognized on July 31, 1937.
