Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is a family-run estate in Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits. Formed from the merger of the Mugneret-Gibourg and Georges Mugneret estates in 2009, it is run by sisters Marie-Christine Teillaud-Mugneret and Marie-Andrée Nauleau-Mugneret, who cultivate just over 8 hectares spread across nine appellations.

Histoire du domaine

The Mugneret family settled in Vosne-Romanée in 1930. Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret, who married in 1928, founded Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg in 1933. There, they produced red Burgundies, including Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Échezeaux. Their only son, Georges Mugneret, an ophthalmologist in Dijon, continued the family’s wine-making business alongside his medical practice. He gradually expanded the vineyard through acquisitions at Clos Vougeot in 1953, in Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1971, in Ruchottes-Chambertin in 1977, and then at Les Vignes Rondes and Les Feusselottes in the 1980s. Following his death in 1988, his wife Jacqueline ensured the estate’s continuity alongside their daughter Marie-Christine, who was soon joined by Marie-Andrée after she completed her studies in oenology at the University of Burgundy. In 2009, Domaines Mugneret-Gibourg and Georges Mugneret merged under the name Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg. The estate is now run by Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée, whilst Lucie and Marion, their respective eldest daughters, joined the business in 2017 and 2018. The two sisters oversee the winemaking process directly, from the hand-harvesting to the blending and bottling at the estate.

Échezeaux (Vosne Romanée)

Échezeaux is a Grand Cru appellation physically delimited within the Côte de Nuits, located entirely within the commune of Flagey-Echézeaux, between Clos de Vougeot and the Premiers Crus of Vosne-Romanée. It brings together eleven climats and features more diverse topography and soils than the neighboring Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru. The vineyard ranges in altitude from 230 meters to just over 300 meters, with a slope reaching 13% mid-slope. Bajocian marls, locally covered with scree, gravel, red alluvium, and yellowish marls, form a complex mosaic.

Histoire de la parcelle

The winegrowing development of Échezeaux is associated with the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux in the 12th and 13th centuries, within the same historical complex as Clos de Vougeot. The Échezeaux Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée was recognized by the decree of July 31, 1937, published on August 11, 1937.

The 2009 Echezeaux comes across as rich, powerful and totally seductive. It shows considerable richness and depth in a more immediate style than the 2010. The aromatics and nuance of the 2010 are missing, but in exchange readers will find a deep, fleshy wine that will deliver considerable pleasure with minimum cellaring. I especially like the intensity of the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2034. Sisters Marie-Andree and Marie-Christine Mugneret made some of the very best wines of the year. Their 2009s capture the silky, sexy personality of the vintage while maintaining a classic, mid-weight sense of structure. Mid crimson. Manages to be both rich and fragrant – quite a feat Very relaxed, subtle and one has the sense that it will develop well. Some reverberation on the finish. Some dryness to keep it zesty. Fresh yet very ripe and concentrated and surely with a long future. But it’s dangerously delicious already...
